Numbers in the preschool classroom

Children often have a grasp at this age of ‘counting’ things but are slower to learn that there is more to counting than simply establishing a single set of numbers. Numerical sense is the next stage in how children begin to understand numbers and what they represent first as symbols and then as sets of quantities. Research suggests that number sense is basic to all animals, not just human beings. The question then becomes how can we train a child’s number sense once in the school environment. Again, by exposing children to exciting math experiences in the preschool classroom, each child can grow their own mathematical understandings.
