United States and State Birds
For teachers and parents wishing to bring the concept of the United 'States' into a young child's understanding, starting with the shapes themselves can be a great place to start. These cards are made up of a pair of cards - 100 cards in all for all 50 states - for children to read and match. Children practice with only a set of six at a time for a few days to a week to put those six to memory. Adults will repeat the name of the state and the name of the bird associated with that state as the child lays the cards, left to right. The child will then match the matching cards with those down below. The teacher can hand out one card at a time for a child to match and the teacher again can repeat the name of the state and state bird and have the child repeat. Continue to do this every day to expose the child to new vocabulary and state concepts.
